Taffy Dare sits deep in the left-hand corner of the couch, her back against the cushion, her weight settled on her right hip with both knees folded together and angled toward frame right; her matching green high-heel shoes are still on her feet, the right heel hooked over the edge of the front cushion and the left foot flat on the cushion, toes pressed into the fabric. Captain Caveman sits squarely across her lap: his short, pear-shaped oval body is compact and rounded, weighing down the skirt of her dress where it drapes over her thighs, and his thick tan-brown hair covers his arms, his chest and his legs in a dense, matted coat so that only his face, his hands and his feet show fair skin. His bulbous Neanderthal-like nose dominates the center of his face, cat-like whisker strands fan out from his cheeks, and his brown eyes are turned up and left toward her face. The orange-and-black spotted loincloth is tied at his neck as a small cape and hangs down his back in a short, flared triangle, its spots scattered large and irregular. One of his hands rests flat on her shoulder and the other grips her forearm where it comes around his waist; her right arm circles his middle, her left hand braced on the couch cushion behind her for balance. Her long blonde hair, feathered in a 1970s Farrah Fawcett style with the front locks flicked outward and back and the ends turned up at the shoulders, presses against the cushion and spills over the top of the sofa back. Her fair skin, thin black eyebrows and black eyes are clear in the light from the window; her red lipstick catches the light as she smiles down at him with a bright open-mouth grin, and he beams back up at her with the same open, happy expression, both faces close together. A single warm lamp off to the right, out of frame, is the key light: it strikes the front of her face and the side of his nose and brow, leaves the backs of the sofa cushions in a soft dim brown, and throws a short, pooled shadow of his small body onto the fabric of her dress and the couch seat. The palette stays in the green of her dress and shoes, the gold of the pendant, the warm orange and black of his spotted cape, the tan-brown of his fur and the honey blonde of her hair against a muted living-room brown. Behind them the couch back and a plain wall recede. The pendant hangs from the chain and swings slightly on her collarbone where it falls free of the high collar. Warm and playful.
