More to See

1girl, solo, walking, mid-stride, looking at viewer, light smile, closed mouth, short hair, parted bangs, kendo uniform, white dougi, white hakama pants, black dou, black tare, kendo armor, dou, holding shinai, holding shinai in one hand, doujou, wooden floor, from below, full body, dutch angle, wide shot, indoors, window light The view is from low near the dojo floor, tilted a few degrees off level, looking up at a single girl as she walks toward the lens. Her weight is on her forward right foot, heel planted, left leg trailing behind with the knee just lifting and the toe still brushing the boards; the white hakama's deep pleats swing forward on the leading leg and drag back on the trailing one, the hem breaking over her bare feet. Her torso leans slightly forward into the walk, shoulders loose, and her right hand grips the shinai at its wrapped hilt, the bamboo blade tilted back over her shoulder so the tip falls behind her head, while her left arm swings free with the fingers relaxed and half-curled. The black dou sits square across her chest over the white cotton dougi, its lacquered plates catching a narrow band of light along the upper edge, the white sleeves of the dougi puffing out beneath the shoulder straps; the black tare hangs from her waist over the hakama, its vertical plates swinging with each step and clicking against the white fabric beneath. Short hair, cut close at the nape, with parted bangs split cleanly off the center of her forehead and falling to either side of her brows; a few strands lift at the temples from her motion. Her chin is tipped down just a little to meet the camera, eyes level on the viewer, and her mouth curves into a light closed-lip smile, one brow a touch higher than the other. Behind and above her the doujou opens out: tall dark timber columns, a high plank ceiling with exposed beams receding toward a far wall, and along the left side a row of tall shoji windows letting in cool grey-white daylight that falls across the floor. That single window light is the only source, raking from the left; it brightens the left side of her face and the left edge of the dou, lays a long soft shadow of her body and the shinai across the boards to the right, and leaves the far right of the hall and the ceiling beams in deepening brown shadow. A dust mote drifts through the shaft of light near her shoulder. The boards under her feet are worn pale in a broad path down the center of the room, dark at the walls. Palette held to white, black and warm wood: the dougi and hakama in cool white, the dou and tare in near-black lacquer with dull highlights, the floor and beams in muted umber, and the whole thing filtered through loose linework that blends into translucent washes, with gentle colour bleeding and layered stains over visible paper texture. Quiet, bright, steady.
