More to See

1girl, solo, black hair, long hair, low ponytail, hair pulled back from the face, dark eyes, standing, legs apart, feet apart, arms on own hips, hands on own hips, elbows out, looking at viewer, smile, closed-mouth smile, confident, kendo uniform, white dougi, white cotton gi, black hakama pants, kendo armor, dou, chest protector, tare, waist protector, barefoot, bare feet, dojo, wooden floor, interior, from below, wide shot, dutch angle, watercolor_(medium), paper_texture, Seen from a low angle tilted slightly off true, so the floorboards run in a faint diagonal and the ceiling beams lean, a single girl fills the centre of a kendo dojo, feet planted wide apart on the bare wood. She stands square to the lens, weight sunk evenly through both heels, and turns the whole of her face straight at the viewer — eyes dark and open, fixed on the lens, mouth closed around a small assured smile with one corner a little higher than the other. Black hair is gathered low at the nape in a ponytail that hangs forward over her right shoulder and swings a touch clear of her collar; loose strands lie flat across her forehead. Both hands rest on her own hips, fingers spread over the black cotton of the hakama's waistband, elbows pushed out square and slightly forward, so the white dougi stretches taut across her chest. Over the white cotton gi she wears the dou, a lacquered black plate bound by a red corded harness that crosses the front of her shoulders, and beneath it the tare hangs in lacquered plates and red lacing over the front of her hips, its hem swaying a finger's width outward as she settles her stance. The white gi's lapels sit crossed at the throat and its sleeves hang loose past her elbows; the black hakama falls in deep pleats to her ankles and the plates of the tare tap against them. Her bare feet are flat on the boards, toes spread for grip, the pale skin striking against the dark floor. The dojo interior is plain and deep: a polished wooden floor, a dark beamed ceiling, a low wall of sliding paper panels on the left, a long rack of training equipment out of focus in the back right. Daylight comes in obliquely through the paper panels on the left, soft and cool where it lands and warm where it spreads, laying a long pale rectangle of light across the boards behind her and a thin bright edge along her left cheek, her left forearm and the left rim of the dou; her right side falls into shallow shadow and she casts a soft, low shadow to the right across the wood. Backlight blooms faintly behind the loose tail of her ponytail and the hanging plates of the tare, which catch the light along their lower edges. Palette held to black, white and the warm amber of the wooden floor, with red only in the lacing and cords of the armor. The tatami and boards carry a fine tooth of paper beneath the color and the edges of her silhouette bleed a little at the shoulder and hem. Proud, sunlit.
