She stood solidly at the edge of the path, like she’d decided that spot belonged to her and the world had simply agreed. Broad-shouldered and powerfully built, her gray skin caught the light dully beneath the armor, scarred in places where metal had failed to do its job. The shape of her ears—slightly pointed, heavy at the base—marked her as orcish even before the rest of her did. A massive shield rested at her side, its surface scarred and dented from more fights than I could count. Her armor was rough and clearly well-used—no polish, no decoration meant to impress. The cuirass across her chest was cracked nearly in half, a golden tree painted over the damage like someone had refused to let it be forgotten. Spiked pauldrons sat heavy on her shoulders, more practical than threatening, and thick metal boots anchored her stance. She wore gauntlets and bracers that looked like they’d stopped blades before—and would again. In her other hand she carried a banner pole almost as tall as she was, the fabric hanging loose but unmistakable. It made her look less like someone waiting for a fight and more like someone daring the fight to start. Torn stockings and exposed skin didn’t soften the image at all. Against her gray hide and the battered steel, it only made one thing clearer—she wasn’t dressed for comfort or appearances.
