A textbook lay open in front of her, though she hadn't turned a single page. Her stationery was neatly arranged beside it, and her schoolbag rested quietly against the chair. Everything was ready. Everything except Luka herself, who still hadn't accepted the fact that she really had to go back to school tomorrow. Her phone screen was lit up with a video call. On the other end, Kamui Gakupo was sitting in his own room. The two of them stared at each other through the screen for a few seconds. Luka sighed first. “I hate the start of a new semester.” Gakupo raised an eyebrow. “School hasn't even started yet, and you've already started hating it?” “Because I hate the thought of having to get up tomorrow morning.” “Don't you have to get up every morning anyway?” “That's different.” Luka buried her face in her arms, leaving only her blue eyes visible. “Having to get up normally is one thing. Tomorrow I'll have to put on my uniform, do my hair, hurry out the door, and then sit in class listening to the teachers talk about a whole bunch of things.” “That does sound exhausting.” There was a hint of amusement hidden in Gakupo's calm voice. Luka immediately lifted her head. “Don't laugh.” “I'm not.” “You're definitely laughing.” “I just think you're cute when you complain.” “…Gakupo.” “Hmm?” “Don't you dare tease me tomorrow.” Gakupo finally laughed. “I'll try.” “That answer doesn't make me feel reassured at all.” They continued talking for a while. They went from complaining about school to discussing their new class schedule, and then to wondering whether the teachers would suddenly give them extra homework. Luka even seriously proposed an idea. “It would be great if the school suddenly announced a holiday tomorrow.” “Do you really think that's possible?” “Dreams are important.” “Then I'll dream with you.” The two of them smiled at the same time from opposite sides of the screen. Eventually, Luka glanced at the time. “We really should go to sleep.” “Good night.” “Good night. See you tomorrow.” “See you tomorrow.” The video call ended, and the room fell quiet again. Luka stared at the darkened phone screen and couldn't help smiling softly. Although she had complained about hating the start of school all night… At least she would get to see Gakupo tomorrow. Luka turned her head. Gakupo was standing beside her. His long purple hair fell neatly around him, his school uniform was immaculate, and he wore the same faint smile she knew so well. Luka looked at him. “When did you get here?” “Just now.” “How come I didn't see you?” “Because someone was too busy staring at the school and mentally preparing herself.” Luka immediately puffed out her cheeks. “I was just preparing myself mentally.” “I can tell.” “You're making fun of me again.” “I'm not.” “You are.” “All right. My mistake.” He said it without the slightest hint of regret. Luka glared at him, but she couldn't help smiling. The two of them walked into the school together. — The first day of classes was, unsurprisingly, not as easy as Luka had hoped. The teachers introduced the plans for the new semester, explained the course schedules, and began teaching the first lessons. Luka had originally thought, “It shouldn't be too difficult on the first day.” But by the time the first class ended, she was already lying face-down on her desk. “I take back what I said yesterday.” Gakupo was organizing his notes beside her. “Which part?” “I still hate the start of school.” “It's only the first class.” “That's exactly why it's scary.” Gakupo chuckled. “Didn't you say yesterday that at least you would get to see me?” Luka suddenly fell silent. She opened her textbook. “There's something the teacher explained today that I still don't quite understand.” Gakupo pulled his chair over beside hers. “Which part?” Luka pointed at the textbook. The two of them went over the day's lesson together. Gakupo explained everything carefully. He broke down the key points from the teacher's lesson and explained them again in a simpler way. Gakupo then placed the pen back into her hand. “All right. Continue.” “You really are annoying.” “Compared to school?” Luka paused. She looked at her notes, then at Gakupo sitting beside her. The classroom was quiet now, with only the two of them left. There was no morning crowd, and no teacher's voice. Only the occasional sound of turning pages and the gradually quieting school outside the window. Suddenly, Luka realized that today hadn't been so bad after all. In fact, it had been much better than she had imagined. Luka gently twirled her pen between her fingers. “Gakupo.” “Hmm?” “I suddenly realized something…” “What?” She looked at him, the corners of her lips slowly curving upward. “I think the start of school isn't so bad after all.” Gakupo paused for a moment. Then he smiled too. “Is it because the lessons got easier?” Luka shook her head. “No.” “Then why?” She didn't answer directly. She simply looked at him. And Gakupo seemed to understand the answer already. Their gazes met in the quiet classroom. The next second, they both began to laugh. A gentle breeze passed outside the window. The new semester had only just begun. Classes, exams, homework, and countless ordinary days were still waiting for them. But to Luka, as long as she could walk into school with this person every day, attend classes together, complain about their teachers' homework together, and stay behind after school to study together… Then the words “the start of school” didn't seem nearly as frightening as they had before.
