Luka stopped and looked ahead before glancing down at the transparent umbrella in her hand. She remembered clearly. Gakupo had said earlier that once they reached this street, it would be his turn to hold the umbrella. With that thought in mind, Luka tightened her grip on the handle slightly. “Gakupo.” “Hmm?” “We're here.” Gakupo followed her gaze toward the street ahead and smiled softly. “Yeah. We are.” Luka moved the transparent umbrella slightly toward the space between them. The rain continued to fall softly against the umbrella, creating a gentle sound. She didn't immediately hand it over. Instead, she looked at Gakupo as though confirming something. “You promised.” Gakupo smiled. “I remember.” “Then it's your turn.” With that, Luka held the umbrella handle out toward him. Gakupo reached out and took it. Their fingers briefly touched around the handle. Only for an instant. Yet Luka seemed to notice it. Her fingers paused slightly before slowly letting go. Once Gakupo had taken the umbrella, he adjusted its angle again. This time, instead of simply making sure Luka stayed dry, he deliberately positioned the transparent umbrella so that it covered both of them completely. “There.” Luka looked at him. “Okay.” She slipped her arm through his again. “Now it's fair.” Gakupo turned his head toward her. “Just switching who holds the umbrella counts as fair?” “Of course.” Luka answered with complete seriousness. “Just now, you held it for me. Now I'm supposed to hold it for you.” “But now it's back to me again.” “So we each get a turn.” A smile appeared at the corners of her lips. “Isn't that nice?” Gakupo looked at her for a few seconds before smiling as well. “It is.” The two of them began walking again. The transparent umbrella reflected blurred street scenery and drifting maple leaves, quietly sheltering the two of them beneath it. Luka leaned against Gakupo's arm, her steps becoming a little lighter. “Gakupo.” “Hmm?” “Next time it rains, I want to hold the umbrella again.” “Sure.” “Don't say it's fine and then take it back yourself.” “All right.” “And don't secretly take it back just because you think I'm not holding it well.” Gakupo couldn't help laughing. “When have I ever done that?” “You haven't.” Luka looked up at him with a hint of amusement in her eyes. “I'm just reminding you in advance.” “Then I'll remember.” “Really?” “Really.” Only then was Luka satisfied. She smiled and continued holding onto his arm. That little stretch of road where she had held the umbrella for him had come to an end. Now it was Gakupo's turn to walk beside her. And to the two of them, perhaps it didn't really matter who was holding the umbrella.
