Today was Gakupo and Luka’s first time doing a couple’s photoshoot centered around the theme of flowers. The photographer had prepared two different settings for them—distinct from one another, yet designed to complement each other perfectly. Gakupo’s theme was cherry blossoms. He wore an elegant Japanese-inspired outfit in deep purple and black, with delicate gold embroidery tracing the edges of the fabric. His long purple hair swayed gently in the breeze, with the two long strands in front of his ears reaching all the way down to his waist. As he stepped beneath the cherry trees, soft pink petals landed among his deep violet hair, creating a surprisingly gentle contrast. Luka stood beneath the wisteria trellis on the opposite side. Clusters of pale violet flowers cascaded from above, surrounding her like a floral curtain. A few strands of her long pink hair lifted in the breeze, while her blue eyes reflected both the flowers and the warm afternoon light. Her violet-and-white dress moved softly with every step, as though she had always belonged within the wisteria garden. At first, they photographed their solo shots separately. Gakupo leaned lightly against a cherry tree, looking up toward the sunlight streaming through the branches. Nearby, Luka reached out and gently touched a strand of wisteria hanging in front of her. “Perfect. Next, we’ll take the couple shots.” At the photographer’s words, they both turned at the same time. Luka was the first to walk over. “So, Mr. Cherry Blossom is finally going to take pictures with Miss Wisteria?” Gakupo couldn’t help but smile. “That sounds like the title of a fairy tale.” “Then make sure you don’t smile too stiffly.” “I think I should be saying that to you.” Still teasing one another, they followed the photographer’s instructions and stepped onto the small bridge. Cherry blossoms filled the left side of the background, while cascading wisteria framed the right. For the first photo, they stood back to back. For the second, Luka turned her head to look at Gakupo. For the third, Gakupo lowered his gaze while Luka looked up at him. Then, during the fourth shot, the photographer suddenly said, “A little closer.” Both of them paused. “Closer than this?” Luka asked. “Yes. Close enough that your foreheads almost touch.” Gakupo stepped forward. Luka didn’t move away. The playful atmosphere between them suddenly became quiet the moment the distance disappeared. A cherry blossom petal slipped from Gakupo’s shoulder. A cluster of wisteria swayed gently behind Luka. Neither of them looked at the camera. They only looked at each other. “Hold that pose.” The shutter clicked again and again. Luka spoke quietly. “Aren’t you standing a little closer than the photographer asked?” Gakupo kept his pose. “And if I say I’m not?” “I wouldn’t believe you.” “Then I suppose you can assume I am.” Luka tried to hold back a smile as she gently grasped the front of his outfit. At that exact moment, the photographer pressed the shutter again. There was no carefully practiced smile in the photograph. No exaggerated pose. Only Gakupo’s softened gaze and Luka’s smile before she had the chance to hide it. By the time they reached the final set, the sky had gradually deepened into a rich blue. The staff lit small lanterns between the cherry blossoms and the wisteria. Gakupo stood beneath the cherry trees. Luka stood within the shadows of the wisteria. Then, slowly, they began walking toward each other. For this final series, the photographer used a double-exposure technique. Within Gakupo’s silhouette appeared blooming cherry trees, stone steps, and warm lantern light. Within Luka’s outline appeared a sea of wisteria, a moonlit lake, and shimmering reflections across the water. And where their silhouettes overlapped, cherry blossoms and wisteria came together in the center of the photograph. For the final shot, neither of them needed instructions. Gakupo naturally held out his hand. Luka placed hers into his. They stood together beneath the flowers and moonlight, smiling softly at one another. The shutter clicked. The photo collection from that day was given a simple title— “Sakura and Wisteria.” One side was cherry blossoms. The other was wisteria. But what the photographs truly captured was neither flower. It was the tenderness they could never quite hide whenever they looked at each other.
