Left panel: she is caught mid-stride walking down a concrete sidewalk in a small rural town, one bare cloven hoof planted flat on the pale pavement, the other hoof lifted behind her with the ankle flexed, her weight carried forward onto the front leg and her hips swung with the step. Both feet are bare — a pair of dark hooves with no shoe, sock, sandal or wrap of any kind, the furred heels and the split hoof-line fully visible against the concrete. She wears a goth-girl outfit: a black ribbed tank top, a short black-and-red plaid skirt swinging with the stride, a black choker at her throat, and ripped fishnet stockings that stop at the ankle, leaving the hooves themselves uncovered. Dark makeup sits heavy on her face — black eyeshadow smudged around the sockets, black lipstick drawn over the mouth — and the makeup makes the open-mouthed smile read sharper: lips parted wide, the two front buck teeth showing clearly, pink inner mouth visible, eyes crinkled at the corners in genuine delight, a slight head tilt toward the camera. Autumn trees line the street behind her in a corridor of orange, russet and yellow canopies, a few leaves caught mid-fall around her shoulders and a scatter of dry leaves drifted against the curb; small wooden houses with low fences recede down the block behind her. Cool overcast autumn daylight comes from above and slightly behind the camera, so her shadow falls forward and short on the sidewalk, and the bare hooves press a faint scuff into the leaf litter with each step. Right panel: seen from a low three-quarter side angle, the same girl sits at a wooden school desk drawn up to her waist, knees tucked under the desktop, one hand resting flat on the desk's scarred lid and the other tucked around the edge of the seat, her torso turned slightly toward the camera. She wears her normal outfit — a long-sleeved light sweater with a dark collar and a plaid skirt over dark trousers, a thin chain necklace at her throat and fingerless gloves on both hands, her hair ornament gripping a lock of hair at one temple. Her head is tipped back a little on her neck and she is smiling with her mouth open showing her buck teeth, eyes bright and looking off to the side toward the window, not at the lens. Behind her shoulder a large multi-paned classroom window frames bare-branched trees and a pale grey-white sky, and the window's cool daylight falls across the far side of her face and the desk top, leaving the near side of her cheek and the underside of her chin in soft shadow; a row of empty desks recedes out of focus behind her. The vertical gutter cuts cleanly between the two scenes — sidewalk on the left, classroom on the right — with the two smiles answering each other across the seam. Bright, warm-hearted, quietly funny.
